Climate change and health equity

Mary Lou Lindegren | Published on 9/30/2023
There is energy and enthusiasm to hold a Heat and Human Health H3 summit in San Diego annually, building on the work from the first summit in August 2023. The organizing committee, which includes members of the EJ subcommittee, is currently getting feedback from the 2023 participants, forming an expanded organizing committee for the 2024 summit, and planning logistics. Ideas for the next summit include adding a poster presentation competition for medical and graduate students, and expanding the audience to include schools of public health, and non-clinicians. You can access presentations from the meeting from the main conference room at the link below.

The work of the 2023 H3 summit organizing committee has been nominated for the Clean Air Award given by the Air Pollution Control District. The 2023 H3 organizing committee includes representatives from the UCSD School of Medicine, the UCSD Climate Action Lab, the American Academy of Pediatrics San Diego climate change and health committee, the LWVSD EJ subcommittee, the American College of physicians, and the Indian Health Council. In addition, the organizing committee is being nominated for a climate leadership award, which could provide a road map for other geographic areas to have a heat and human health summit .

The LWVSD panel on heat and human health on Sept 18 included presentations from Dr Wilma Wooten, Director of Public Health Services for the County of San Diego; The Partner Relay Team who gets emergency messages out to the community; Kristin Van der Molen of the Desert Research Institute, a community-driven researcher on climate impacts and adaptation, and Kristin Guirguis of Scripps Institute of Oceanography, a climate and extreme weather researcher.

We now have a video of the talk in English as well as one in Spanish. The English video is at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8HyLeAoC_i4&t=21s. The video in Spanish is at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n23ISiJA9b8&t=3967s. Please be sure to note the last several slides of Dr. Wooten’s presentation that include wealth of resources regarding climate change and health. The EJ subcommittee will be trained in the heat and human health curriculum outlined in Dr. Van der Molen’s talk.
