IMMIGRATION
& DEPORTATION

Chair: Beryl Flom

Meets the second Thursday of the month at 9am on Zoom

Participation is open to the public

The goals of the committee are to educate members and the public about immigration and deportation issues, advocate for improvements, and assist those in need. This group does hands-on projects: collecting items for deportees and asylum seekers in Tijuana, throwing a craft party for children in shelters, observing court, touring an immigration detention center, visiting shelters and projects in Tijuana, meeting with the Border Patrol, and meeting with staff members of local Congressional representatives.

There is an LWV California Immigration Interest Group that meets by zoom periodically. The subcommittee researches state bills which affect people who are undocumented and live in California, so most of the work is done in the first half of the year.
There is a google list of participants; if you would like to join the distribution list and be notified of meetings, please contact Adrianna Champagne-Zamora

There is also a LWVUS Immigration Discussion Group which has a leaders group of members from around the U.S. and does the same thing - advising LWVUS what advocacy they might do to work toward immigration reform.  A few times a year, they host a speaker as well.  Please contact Katherine Gavzy to be put on that email distribution list.
