Help research homelessness policies

Myles Pomeroy | Published on 4/1/2023
Our Housing Committee has expanded with the addition of new members from League of Women Voters North County. And, the scope of the committee has expanded to encompass homelessness.

Some committee members will pursue actions focused on planning, zoning, and preserving affordable housing using our Housing Action Policy, Contact Mary Thompson at thompsmg@roadrunner.com to get involved in that area of concern.

Other committee members will research how every city in the San Diego region is dealing with its homeless residents to determine each city’s progress toward the goals described in our Homelessness position. The research involves obtaining information about:
● what each city is doing as reflected by reviewing city council agendas to find items or
actions that affect homeless people.
● police or sheriff contacts with the homeless (Google research).
● Impressions and observations of local residents regarding homelessness (conversations
with League members, other contacts)
● Allocation of any funds from the city’s Community Development Block Grant (CDBG)
program to specifically help the homeless.

You can help by volunteering to “adopt” a city to research. You will receive a worksheet with
guides for how to find the information. We estimate, based on our own reviews of the cities of Imperial Beach and Vista, that this project will take at least 10 hours of computer time and 1-2 hours of email or phone time, depending on how many people are contacted in a city. A Summary Report is due on 5/1/2023 and will be a form with a comment section for your evaluation of the overall situation.
