Dear Mayor Gloria,

The League of Women Voters of San Diego applauds your establishment of a Commission on the Status of Women and Girls. At our annual meeting last weekend, LWV members adopted a Resolution to nominate our former president and recently-retired Congresswoman Susan Davis to be chair of this Commission (copy of Resolution attached).

We are sure you will agree this would be a brilliant appointment, which will guarantee the leadership necessary to launch this important endeavor to assure that rights and opportunities are available for San Diego’s women and girls. Following her years of engagement with public issues during her LWV tenure, Congresswoman Davis’ solid record of achievement in elective office at local, state, and national levels has uniquely prepared her for this Commission role.

The Commission’s success will be accelerated by Congresswoman Davis’ passion for advancing equity for women and girls, which especially is needed in guiding City enactment and implementation of a CEDAW ordinance. In addition, as chair of this Commission, she will be able to attract a stellar group to serve as Commissioners. The Resolution we adopted also commits LWV to “encourage the 36 community-based organizations who have supported adoption of a CEDAW ordinance to nominate prospective members to serve on the CSWG, to ensure that the widest possible diversity of life experience is represented.”

Please be assured, Mayor Gloria, of our continuing interest in, and commitment to, the goals you have set forth in establishing the Commission on the Status of Women and Girls. We stand ready to assist in whatever ways are appropriate.

Sincerely,

Kim Knox, President (she/her)
