Testimony to the San Diego City Council Rules Committee:
The League joined the More Choice San Diego coalition because we support electoral methods that provide the broadest voter representation possible and are expressive of voter choices.
Ranked-choice voting accomplishes these, as well as other voter benefits. It has been shown to:
* increase voter turnout
* produce results that more closely align with the will of the voter
* maximize effective votes and minimize “wasted” votes
* promote sincere voting over strategic voting
* require the winner to receive a majority – not just a plurality – of votes
This is why the League has joined with more than a dozen other voter-centered organizations to support this initiative, and we urge the Rules Committee to move it forward so voters will get the chance to have their voices heard.
