April 2022

Jeanne Weidner

Would you like to help register voters for the primary election in June? The Voter Empowerment committee has scheduled 14 voter registration events in the city and county libraries in April and May. We have assembled a terrific team of volunteers but we can always use additional help to make these a success. As you know, our in person activities have been curtailed for more than two years, so this is a great opportunity to interact with voters in person and represent the league.

If you would like to get involved in this important effort, please contact Jeanne Weidner or Carol Rohe and we will be happy to give you more information, and provide the training to join our team. Thanks!

Several League members, as well as friends of the League, joined in the tour of the San Diego County Registrar of Voters (ROV) in March. The tour was led by Rosie Rascon (second from left in the photo) who is the Coordinator for Volunteer & Public Services at the ROV.

During this time we saw firsthand how elections are conducted in our county. We were taken through all the steps on how a ballot gets processed and counted, from scanning the envelopes (twice), to signature verification, ballot scanning and on through the tabulation stage. Rosie also answered our questions about how the ROV is implementing the Voter’s Choice Act for our county, which will see its first example in the special election for Assembly District 80 on April 5.

We also learned that the Registrar of Voters is seeking temporary election workers for the June 7, 2022 Gubernatorial Primary Election. Election workers can earn up to $20 an hour depending on the position. There is a particular need for election workers to manage the operations of ballot drop box locations and site managers for vote centers around the county. We encourage all League members who are interested to take advantage of this opportunity to serve our county. You can learn more about it at the ROV website.

Thanks to all of you who attended this event and especially to Rosie and the ROV for sponsoring it during this very busy time while they are preparing for the primary election.
