The Zero Waste Lifestyle

Recognizing there are changes needed to improve the environment is the first step to conquering the challenges to living a zero waste lifestyle. These are two steps to take to embrace a zero waste lifestyle:
1. Take An Inventory. Begin by evaluating what you use and what you throw out. An average American generates approximately 4 lbs of waste every day. This includes food scraps, packaging, products that become obsolete. Consider such actions as composting, buying in bulk, repairing or repurposing items.
2. Take It Slow. The transition to zero waste takes time. Make small changes. This can be as simple as changing your shopping habits by bringing a reusable shopping bag and making a list of items you need so that you don’t overbuy. Set small goals for yourself that are realistic and attainable.
You might also consider creating your own zero waste kit. This is the perfect way to combat convenience-based waste during your day. Do you need coffee? Bring a reusable coffee cup. Thirsty? Carry a reusable water bottle. Need groceries? Pack reusable bags for any of your shopping needs. What you put in your zero waste kit will depend on your personal preferences. Some of the reusables you can include in your kit might be a water bottle, coffee/tea cup, straw, cloth napkin, utensils, food containers/jars, shopping/produce bags. Determine what to put in your kit to avoid waste wherever possible.
