A Few Updates from ReWild Mission Bay

1. The Climate Bond SD867 (Pro. 4) passed the state assembly and will be on the ballot this November. The Safe Drinking Water, Wildfire Prevention, Drought Preparedness and Clean Air Bond Act of 2024 would have the state borrow $10 billion to pay for climate and environmental projects.
2. The next step for Re-Wild is to investigate the Southern California Wetlands Recovery Programs as a location for feedback, guidance and support.
3. There needs to be key improvements at the Coastal Commission as funding is the critical driver of the implementation of the ReWild Mission Bay project.
4. Action Alert: The CA Ocean Protection Council released their draft framework which outlines how coastal waters are conserved as part of the state’s 30x30 initiative. The framework builds on national and international standards for managing marine areas. However, estuaries (which cross the border between land and sea) risk being inadequately protected by policies meant to protect land or water. Re Wild is encouraging people to reach out to Coastal Policies Solutions to ensure that the final framework includes criteria to protect estuaries from threats they face.
5. It is fledging season and the California Least Tern needs help to keep this endangered species population from declining. The birds are facing significant disturbances from boating and fireworks. ReWild is joining with the Audubon Society and calling on the City of San Diego and the California Coastal Commission to take action to protect these birds.
