July 2024 Criminal Justice Board Report

In June, the Criminal Justice Committee met at Jeanne Brown’s home for lunch and to plan for the 2024-25 League Year. It was decided that we would concentrate our efforts on the Sheriff’s Department, including the deaths in our county jails. This will incorporate looking at CLERB (Citizens’ Law Enforcement Review Board), transparency, how discipline is affected by Union agreements, Deputy Training, the possibility of an Inspector General, Racial Justice, and how our county compares to other California counties in these respects. We also have an enthusiastic student from UCSD who will be working with us during the summer on this research. We hope to learn enough that we will be able to share our information with the larger community as much as possible. Since the Sheriff position is an elected office, she is responsible to the voters, not the Board of Supervisors and due to a quirk in the elections, her term is for 6 years rather than the normal 4. Therefore we feel it is critical that voters are more aware of the strengths and weaknesses of this important office.
We will be planning speakers and events for the committee and for the two county Leagues (San Diego and North County) for this year and possibly further on. We welcome interested League members to become committee members. We can use the help.
