The next meeting of the Immigration & Deportation Committee is Thursday, June 9 at 9am on Zoom. You can find the link on the LWVSD website - scroll down to upcoming events and click on the committee meeting. I am trying to get a staff member from Congressmember Juan Vargas’ office to speak about the work of the Hispanic Caucus on immigration in Congress, but it is in the hands of the scheduler. At our last meeting, two men from the City of Tijuana and Baja California State spoke about their work in helping asylum seekers. They run a couple of shelters, provide some food and supplies to all the shelters, make sure the people have work permits and IDs so their children can go to school, provide healthcare, and basically welcome them as they await their turn to seek asylum in the U.S. or decide to stay in Mexico.

A terrific committee from around the U.S. is preparing to do a caucus at the LWVUS convention on June 24 at 7:30am (PDT). We are asking the League to take a more active role in advocating for immigration reform and will be speaking at the plenary sessions. We are also gathering support from many Leagues around the U.S.

Children’s Party on July 16

We will be going to a shelter in Tijuana that houses about 100 children of all ages (plus their parents) for a party and hot dog lunch on Saturday, July 16. A bus will take us from the border after we walk across, we will set up and be ready for the party from 11am-2pm and then head back across the border. Anyone who goes must have a valid US passport. We plan to do games and crafts. The food will be purchased ahead of time. We are particularly looking for people with polaroid cameras (and film) so we can take the childrens' pictures and then let them make frames for them. We also need help with funding this project which you can do on the LWVSD website or by mailing in a check to the League - just be sure to mark it for the Children’s party. Please let Beryl Flom know if you’d like to go or have some craft ideas.
