LWVSD urges mayor to add Office of Child and Youth Success

LETTER TO THE MAYOR

May 24, 2021
Dear Mayor Gloria,

The League of Women Voters of San Diego was very disappointed to learn that you chose not to include an Office of Child and Youth Success in your budget for next year despite six of the councilmembers putting it as a priority in their budget requests. At this time when our schools and community will be reopening from all of the restrictions imposed by COVID, it is very important that our community come together in support of children, youth, and their families and that we have a coordinated and smooth recovery which would be greatly supported by this Office.

We know you have a deep concern about homelessness, but if we do not successfully support our children and youth, we may exacerbate this issue. The amount $350,000 requested to fund this office is less than one percent of the budget and should be easily recouped through state, federal, and foundation grants, which we currently are not eligible for.

This Office of Child and Youth Success exists in various forms in most major cities across the nation such as San Francisco and it is time for it to be established in San Diego.

Thank you for reconsidering adding this extremely important office in your budget to make San Diego an exemplar family-friendly employer and one where all of our children and youth thrive.

Sincerely,

Lori Thiel, President
LWV San Diego
