ReWild Coalition Update

ReWild Mission Bay is a project of the San Diego Bird Alliance and ReWild Coalition partners dedicated to restoring valuable wetlands in the northeast corner of San Diego’s Mission Bay. Restoring Mission Bay has been an initiative of the city for over 25 years. Science has confirmed that wetlands are critical to maintaining a balanced, oxygenated, diverse set of habitats. Wetlands act as a vital green infrastructure that provides clean water, optimal habitat and climate resiliency.
On May 14, 2024, The San Diego City Council unanimously approved their DeAnza Natural Plan for the ReWild area. The plans includes 100% of ReWild’s acre goals and 85% of their total habitat restoration acres. The City’s plan does not include enough acres to effectively buffer and become marsh as sea level rises. ReWild is now focused on improvement and implementation of the DeAnza plan.
The ReWild Coalition is specifically working on in 2025:
1. Get the plan funded and restoration started
2. Get Coastal Commission staff and commissioners out for site visits to position for continued improvement to the DeAnza Natural Plan.
3. Following the 10 year Mission Bay Park Improvement Planning process which includes wetland restoration on North Fiesta Island.
4. Working on getting the Mission bay Park Improvement fund money directed towards habitat, water quality and resilient shorelines.
5. Contracting San Francisco Estuary Institute to work on an historical ecology report for the mouth of Tecolote Creek. The City has indicated they want to do wetland restoration there.
