Mondays, January 6, February 3, and March 3 at 5:30pm via Zoom
The transition to a new President in 2025 will be a time of anxiety as new policies unfold and new ideas are presented. Many are worried that changes could affect our democracy. How do we as individuals understand the changes and decide what action to take? What role could there be for the LWV?
Join the newly-formed Defending Democracy Discussion Group to have a forum for conversation about this important topic. We will meet on the first Monday of the first three months of the year on Zoom. It will be an opportunity for an open-ended discussion that may lead to further meetings, study or some ideas for the League. You don’t need to register for it, but can just join for one or more of these three meetings.
Join with Zoom or the link can be found on the LWVSD website calendar.
The meetings will be recorded so that members who cannot attend will be able to listen.
Also, we are forming a Defending Democracy Discussion Group email list through which we can share ideas and articles as the year unfolds. If you would like to join it, please contact Jane Andrews at janea@lwvsandiego.org.
At the LWVSD Annual Meeting last June, Defending Democracy was voted to be an issue for emphasis during this year with the Presidential election. It is a core element of the mission of the LWV both locally and nationally. There are a variety of subtopics within the broad topic, such as:
-
Aggrandizing the power of the executive
-
Spreading disinformation
-
Quashing dissent
-
Targeting marginalized communities
-
Pardons to license lawbreaking
-
Regulatory retaliation – to punish critics
-
Abuse of Insurrection Act to order military force to quash dissent and target vulnerable communities
The Discussion Group could decide on some areas of focus in its initial meeting.
