Understanding Power San Diego Initiative and Energy in San Diego

The Power San Diego campaign has been undergoing a signature drive to get the question of a not-for-profit municipal electric utility that would replace SDG&E in the city of San Diego on the ballot. Power San Diego would create a public utility that would cut rates, protect rooftop solar, and have no fixed charges. San Diegans pay the highest electric rates in the country, despite enormous profits for SDG&E. The LWVSD SEAC and Public Policy Committees have heard from Bill Powers, Power San Diego; SDG&E; the City of San Diego Sustainability and Mobility Dept. about the feasibility study on public power by the consultant NewGen (Phase I has been completed and Phase 2-a deeper dive- is ongoing); and San Diego Community Power. We will hear from the Taxpayers Association on May 21, 2024 at 4pm. Of concern is the funding to complete the phase 2 feasibility study has been cut in the recent Mayor’s budget. The campaign needs to collect 80,000 signatures by middle of May.
